Now we're going to look at a philosophical overview of the thorax. The thorax contains a number of soft, viable structures within the protective walls of the thoracic cavity. And it developed with evolution as cellular respiration, direction cellular respiration, became inadequate. And following that, there was surface respiration with transfer of gases through the surface of the organism.
But as the volume increased, thus the system, the respiratory and cardiovascular system, was required internally to allow for the requirements of oxygenation of the cells, and this required this protective mechanism over the top of it. So this makes palpation of the organs basically impossible. We can palpate the movement of the thoracic cave but not the structures themselves. Or we can interpret the movements of the walls as indicating to us what's happening underneath.
But mostly, this area requires knowledge of surface anatomy, good auditory skills, and often good knowledge of referred pain, as we have a number of structures here that share common neurosomes and may refer pain to similar areas. It's not as difficult as the abdomen where there's far more complications with multiple systems and organs there. But the problems still exist.
So these structures have a mechanical function. And often the answer to a problem here, a mechanical function problem, is mechanical treatment. And whenever this involves mechanical treatment to this area, it's often urgent.
