EMMA VODDEN: Good morning Facebook, and we are live from Las Vegas. This morning I'm joined by Iain Murray, our associate editor for knowledge translation. And he's going to talk us through some of the really important steps that happen after papers are accepted. Because it's not enough these days just to have your paper published and be on the Journal's website. We're taking a positive and proactive stance in terms of helping your paper after acceptance.
EMMA VODDEN: So Iain's just going to talk us through that. So welcome Iain.
IAIN MURRAY: Well, pleasure to be here Emma. Thanks for having me. Yes, as Chris Martin from the program in Australia once said, it's time to replace, publish, or perish with get visible or vanish. And so, I want to talk to you this morning about the things we're doing at the Journal to try and make sure that all the hard work that our authors put in is as visible as possible. So everyone works hard to create their data and publish their article, but that's just not enough.
IAIN MURRAY: Well, what can we do to try and get that out to the audience? Well, the first thing we can do is to create assets for communicating our work. And that may be in the form of infographics. It may be in the form of podcasts or video summaries, things that busy surgeons, or clinicians, or policymakers can digest easily in a short period of time. Now once we've made these assets, again, it's not just enough to have the assets.
IAIN MURRAY: We need to get them out to the audience. And we can do that through our various social media channels, both through the Journal and it's also important that comes from the authors itself. And we've been doing all we can to try and support our authors. So authors are now invited to see whether they'd be interested in having an infographic made of their article. They're very welcome to make their own infographics.
IAIN MURRAY: And the same for podcasts and animations that we are now introducing this month. We can also evaluate how that is having an impact, and it's been huge. We've seen that articles that have these assets, whether it be infographics or podcasts, are downloaded more than articles that don't. They're accessed a lot more. And they have a much higher altmetric, which means that there's a lot more chatter on the internet about them.
IAIN MURRAY: So I would encourage you all to make your own assets, to work with us. And to try and publish in journals where you know that the Journal is going to be working on your side, to try and make sure your article, all your hard work, has the greatest impact possible.
EMMA VODDEN: Great. Well, thanks so much for joining us, Iain. And have a great day, everybody.
IAIN MURRAY: Thank you
EMMA VODDEN: Thank you very much. Bye.
