NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: Hello and welcome to our Bioanalysis Zone interview with the winner of the 2020 Bioanalysis Rising Star award, Sooraj, as well as Ngan from Waters Corporation who sponsored the award, and, without whom, none of this would be possible. So, firstly, congratulations Sooraj for winning this prestigious award. Could you start by talking about your inspiration behind becoming a bioanalytical scientist.
SOORAJ BAIJNATH: Well, I think the journey for me has been sort of serendipitous, in that I never imagined that this was what I'd been doing one day. However, ever since I've gotten into bioanalysis, I've really enjoyed learning new techniques and methods and answering important research questions. And I think the important-- well, one of the most fun aspects of being involved in bioanalysis is that the field is always evolving and growing.
SOORAJ BAIJNATH: So there's always lots of for us to learn.
NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: And you found out a few months ago that you were successful and you had won. How did it feel when you won, and what has the experience been like?
SOORAJ BAIJNATH: I think, as a whole, this experience has really been overwhelming for me, especially to see the amount of support that I received globally. Like, I usually go about my business quietly in my little corner in the lab and not really one for much show. But it's been really touching to see the number of likes, shares, and votes that I received, especially to see the little comments that people have left behind explaining how I've been involved in their academic journey.
NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: It's really nice to hear that. And thinking ahead, do you have any words of inspiration for anyone thinking about nominating themselves for the award next year?
SOORAJ BAIJNATH: I think the best advice you can give someone is to just go for it. As with anything in life, if you never try, the answer will always be no. I think not to let your circumstances or the fear of being up against other international scientists intimidate you, to believe in yourself, believe in your ability, and to just go for it.
NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: Great advice. And what is next for you and your career?
SOORAJ BAIJNATH: Well, since I've won the award, there's been some big changes in my career. I recently just moved to Sweden, and I've taken up a position as a researcher at the Medical Mass Spectrometry Department at Uppsala University. So I'm hoping to learn as much as I can and to contribute to the research that's going on.
NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: And you've talked a bit about your move to Sweden. How do you anticipate the award influencing and benefiting your career?
SOORAJ BAIJNATH: I think one of the most important outcomes of winning is the international exposure that you get. So I'm expecting to grow my international networks and also to increase my visibility when I'm applying for maybe positions in the future or funding opportunities. I think this really stands out in your CV.
NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: Great. Thank you, Sooraj. And Ngan, now, if we come to you, could you explain a little bit about how Waters Corporation are involved with the Bioanalysis Rising Star award?
NGAN NGUYEN: Yes, absolutely. As the original and only sponsor, Waters takes great pride in our involvement with a Rising Star award. Being part of the program that nurtures bright minds and up-and-comers in bioanalysis helps ensure the field continues to attract the best the scientific community has to offer.
NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: Great. Thank you. And considering the extraordinary year that we've experienced this year, why is it so important for Waters Corporation to support initiatives that encourage young scientists?
NGAN NGUYEN: Well, it's. Really a combination of both altruism and good business sense. We see hard work and academic performance recognized so that those who are contributing and advancing bioanalysis continue to move the field forward. Our involvement is also important, as it gives Waters a platform to build our reputation for best-in-class of instrumentation, informatics, and chemistries with a new generation of scientists.
NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: And finally, why would you encourage managers and mentors to nominate their colleagues next year?
NGAN NGUYEN: With the growth of the Rising Star award over the last several years, I don't think people need much encouragement. Academic mentors inherently see the value in programs like these and recognize the importance of rewarding the best and the brightest.
NAAMAH MAUNDRELL: Great. Thank you both very much. [MUSIC PLAYING]
