Welcome to COUNTER Foundation Class 6. This is a revised recording to reflect some minor changes in Release 5.0.2 of the counter code of practice released in 2021. This tutorial explains the database reports and how to use them. There are three counter reports that provide information about database usage.
Database Master Reports or DR, show activity across all metrics for entire databases or fixed collections of content which behave like a database. The deal can be filtered according to user needs and has two Standard Views. Database search and item usage, or DR_D1, shows total item investigations and requests, as well as searches. The metrics are searches automated, searches, federated, searches regular, total item investigations and total item requests.
We will examine these in more detail shortly. Database access denied or DR-D2 shows where users were denied access because simultaneous use or concurrency licenses were exceeded or because an institution did not have a license for the database. The metrics are limited exceeded and no license. There are three types of such metrics in database reports. Searches regular shows, the number of times that a user has searched a database where there is only one database available to search, or they have the option to choose from a selection of databases. Searches automated shows the number of times a user searches a set of databases where there are multiple databases available, but the user cannot choose to limit their search to a subset of these databases. and Searches.
federated is the number of times that a search is run remotely through an API. In this scenario, we will look at these metrics in action. Susan is researching the History of Antibiotics on publisher platform Alpha, which incorporates multiple databases that do not permit user selection. Susan runs a search for history and antibiotics. The counts are 0 searches regular, 1 searches automated, 1 searches platform, and 0 searches federated.
For a database like this, the cost per use calculation may be more dependent on searches than on full text downloads. This is dependent on library practice. Susan continues her research on publisher platform Beta, which includes multiple databases that do allow user selection. She runs the same search and the counts are 1 searches regular, 0 searches automated, 1 searches platform, and 0 searches federated.
In a separate session, Susan uses an API to search, publish a platform Beta and the count for that activity is 0 for each of searches regular, searches automated and searches platform and 1 for searches federated. Investigations and requests are also reported in database reports. Total item requests is the total number of times the full text of a content item was downloaded or viewed, and total item investigations is the number of times a content item or information related to a content item was investigated by a user.
The key metric depends on the type of database being analyzed. Total item requests is likely to be useful for full text to databases, although investigations are also counted, while total item investigations would be very valuable for non full text databases. Also known as abstracting and indexing or A&I or citation only databases. Database Delta is a full-text database and the only database available on the platform from a list of search results.
Susan investigates three abstracts two article abstracts from the Journal of Antibiotics are Fun and one from the Journal of Medical Historical Trivia. She then triggers additional investigations, as well as some request metrics by downloading to full text article PDFs from the Journal of antibiotics are fun. This truncated example of the DR_d1 report shows how Susan's search requests and investigations will be reported for database delta.
She found the articles from the Journal of Antibiotics are Fun particularly useful and wants to find out if there are more journal articles by the same author. So she runs a search on the author's name on Gamma and abstracting and indexing database from the list of search results. Susan then opens three abstract records for journal articles by this author. This truncated example of the DR_D1 one report shows how Susan's search requests and investigations will be reported for database Gamma because database Gamma has no full text.
Susan's librarian should use total item investigations when analyzing usage of this database. You can learn more by watching more COUNTER Foundation Classes on YouTube or visit the counter website at https//www.projectcounter.org and download our Friendly Guides.
