Now we're gonna look at a philosophical overview of the female pelvis. If the thorax is like a covered birdcage, where you can hear the birds singing but you're not sure which one is sick, made more difficult by the fact they share same perch, then the abdomen's like a sack full of drowning kittens, where you can feel the kittens, but you're not sure which one's about to die.
And the pelvis is like the black box at the back of the plane, where you have no idea what's going on unless you stick your finger in or open it up. In the female pelvis, we have continuation of the urinary system with urethra and bladder. We have the continuation of the genital system, which is both external, the vulva, and internal-- vagina, ovary, cervix, uterus, et cetera.
These are paired and unpaired organs so there is implications for where the pain is referred to and where the patient feels it. And the-- similar to the testes, the ovary migrates from the abdomen, and that has implications for referral of pain and spread of carcinoma. The difference with the ovary, it comes-- it remains within the pelvis, and this has implications for where it rests.
So inflammation of the ovary can influence structures in the lateral pelvic wall. The female pelvis has a number of large internal viscera, and this means there's always a possibility of hidden or occult tumors or pathology-- other pathology. And the abdomen sits just above it, which makes confusion between abdominal pelvic conditions also a problem.
Now, we must remember, in the female there's almost always the possibility of pregnancy or the complications of a previous pregnancy that could be influencing the problems within that pelvis. The urinary catheter is very short, which means that trauma is far less likely, but infection becomes a very big problem.
