Hello, everybody. Thanks for coming along to Society Street 2022. Woo-hoo! And we're off. I'm going to give everyone a couple of minutes to just log in and sort themselves out and work out what's what. I'll start on the meat of it in just a second. You might notice -- or you should notice -- that there's a chat function on the right hand side of your screen.
If you put in your name., you'll be able to participate in chat there, and chat with the other participants and ask questions of the speakers and make comments and questions and generally chat to each other. We encourage you to do so because we are big on conversation at Society Street. For those of you who have been to our events before, you'll know that.
And of course, there's the live Q&A with the speakers straight after the session. Please come along to that if you can. So, yeah, that's kind of a teeny bit of housekeeping, which I will go over again, as will Dana. But we'll get there in a sec. So, yeah, I hope everyone's logged in now, so formally: Thanks so much for coming along today, and welcome to the first session of Society Street 2022.
I am not chairing today's session because we've been really, really lucky this year to have a number of people volunteer to work with us on our program committee to help widen the voices and ideas that Society Street shares with our community. So you'll be hearing from many of them through the year and maybe even seeing them at in-person events later on this year.
So we're keeping our fingers crossed for that. I'll start off then with a big thank you to Dana Compton, who I know some of you know for putting today's session together and for chairing it. She's convened a group of people who are all thinking deeply about DEI and how that looks specifically in the learned society space. And I can't wait to hear what they have to say. I'm really looking forward to listening to it.
She did want me to just mention that we all know that DEI can be quite an emotive topic for some. And so we'd just like to be explicit about our guidelines for comments and conversation, both in the chat and in the live Q&A session that runs straight after the conversation you're just about to hear. We know that our Society Street Community are thoughtful and sensitive to these issues anyway, but because being explicit is always good,
we do ask you to be mindful of your language and tone, to avoid generalizations, to acknowledge and accept what other people say. Seek to listen and understand. Always assume the best intentions of others and make sure that we give each other time to speak and to take a break and step away if you need to. So that's kind of housekeeping stuff. Finally, the thing that I need to say is that Society Street has been made possible by the generosity of our sponsors and conference partners.
We have new sponsors and partners for this year. Wiley and Elsevier continue to support us as gold sponsors. They're joined in 2022 by Frontiers. Atypon continues to support us as a silver sponsor and our sustaining partners this year are 67 Bricks, Cadmore Media and TBI Communications. We'd like to thank them all for their support. Without them, we'd be unable to share this content so freely. So a final reminder to those of you who've joined us while I was in the middle of all of that, there's a chat function on the right hand side of your screen.
We encourage you to participate. Please also follow us on Twitter, if that's your thing. Feel free to tweet using #Society Street 2022 and a reminder that at the end of the session, there'll be a Zoom link that pops up that will open up a Zoom meeting for a Q&A with the speakers and other attendees who choose to join. I am just about to hand over to our speakers, which is what you've all been waiting for, I know.
Dana is joined by Raj, Nicola and Susan, all of whom are waiting to introduce themselves to you and get stuck into what promises to be a great conversation. So I'll get out of the way and let them get on with it. I look forward to talking about it on chat and talking with some of you about it further in the Zoom session afterwards. Right, take it away, Dana.
