KATE SAMUELS: This video will demonstrate a trigger finger release. Trigger finger is a common condition in which patients have pain at the base of the finger and the finger triggers or catches when opening or closing the hand as seen here. The tendons that bend or flex the finger pass through a tunnel beneath a pulley. If the tendon becomes irritated, it may thicken or form a nodule, making it more difficult to pass beneath that pulley.
KATE SAMUELS: It may become momentarily stuck as you try to straighten the finger, causing the finger to trigger. Incision is made along a crease you already have in the palm of your hand, so that when it heals, the scar will not be noticeable. The goal of surgery is to widen the opening of the tunnel so that the tendons can slide through more easily. This is done on an outpatient basis, meaning you will not need to stay overnight in a hospital.
KATE SAMUELS: Dr. Badia divides the pulley, which is the roof of the tunnel. He ensures that he divides this entire section of tunnel. When it heals, the sheath is looser and the tendons have more room to glide through. The anesthesia used for this procedure is local block anesthesia with sedation. This means that the hand is numb and the patient is sleepy but won't remember the procedure and is not under general anesthesia.
KATE SAMUELS: He now pulls on the tendons to ensure the finger flexes or bends freely. He does this to each of the tendons to ensure that they can both glide freely. The small wound is closed with absorbable suture, which dissolves in about two weeks.
KATE SAMUELS: Typically, only one or two stitches are needed. Trigger finger is most common in women between the ages of 40 and 60, but can occur in both men and women and at any age. Trigger finger is more common in people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes.
KATE SAMUELS: A light bandage is then applied to the hand to keep the incision clean and dry. We encourage patients to use their hand right away, avoiding heavy activities only for the first few days. For more information, visit our website: drbadia.com. Thank you for your attention.
