VIVIAN XIE: Flow cytometry is a bioanalytical method capable of detecting and measuring the physical and chemical properties of a population of cells. Rapid multi-parametric analysis of single or populations of cells by flow cytometry provides robust data throughout the different stages of gene-mediated cell-therapy development. Populations of cells are typically suspended in a salt-based buffer solution to mimic physiological conditions.
VIVIAN XIE: Cells flow past single or multiple lasers which produce both scattered and fluorescent light signals that can be read by photodiodes, photomultiplier tubes, or other light-sensitive detectors. The cells are analyzed for visible light scatter and fluorescence parameters. Benefits offered by flow cytometry can be reaped in multiple disciplines, including but not limited to immunology, virology, molecular biology, infectious-diseases monitoring, and cancer biology, amongst others.
VIVIAN XIE: High-throughput analysis of large cell populations with small sample-batch requirements make it highly attractive for cell and gene therapeutic development and validation, fitting comfortably within the field of bioanalytical assays. In this In the Zone, we will explore the benefits of flow cytometry for the development of gene-mediated cell therapies, how it can be utilized through the different stages of their development, and how to utilize flow in tandem with other methods and instruments.
