NARRATOR: This video demonstrates the correct setup for the ultrasound and the patient when placing a central line. First, notice that the sterile equipment is on a Mayo stand next to the patient, with the probe cover open and ready to go. The ultrasound machine is set up to the patient's left, with a layer of non-sterile gel already applied to the linear transducer. The operator inverts the sterile cover, and then with one hand, picks up the linear transducer, allowing the sterile cover to cover the entirety of the transducer cable without touching the transducer with her sterile gloves.
NARRATOR: She then uses the rubber bands to ensure that the transducer cover is tight against the transducer, and a second rubber band to ensure that the cover does not ride up over the cable. A layer of sterile gel can be placed on her sterile field or directly onto the linear transducer. The probe can be laid across the sterile field, while the field is prepped for the rest of the procedure.
