Midesophageal four-chamber view. The midesophageal four-chamber view is generally obtained at an average probe depth of 35 centimeters with a multi-plane angle of 0 degrees. It is a good starting point for performing a complete transesophageal echo examination. The chambers of the heart that can be seen are the right atria, the right ventricle, the left atria, and the left ventricle.
The tricuspid valve can be seen to the left, and the mitral valve can be seen to the right. The mitral valve has two leaflets. The longer, anterior leaflet on the left, and the shorter, posterior leaflet on the right. The left ventricular walls we can identify are the inferior septal wall and the anterior lateral wall. As seen in this image, the right ventricle under normal circumstances does not extend to the apex of the heart.
This view is one of the standard views to assess left ventricular function and wall motion abnormalities.
