Slightly to the side of the patient, the clinician can help control or prevent a collapsing fall. When the patient begins to collapse, the clinician moves right behind the patient. If the loss of support is momentary, the clinician attempts to right the patient with a firm grip on the gait belt. If the patient continues to collapse the clinician bends her knee into a lunging position and pulls the patient onto her thigh, supporting the patient until the patient is able to stand again or until a chair can be provided.
If the patient cannot be supported or no chair is available the clinician lowers the patient slowly to the ground keeping the patient's center of mass as close as possible to the clinician's body and maintaining effective body mechanics.
