SPEAKER: The vast complexities of biology require approaches that build a complete picture, starting from single cells to tissues and beyond. Single-cell solutions can provide the resolution and scale that researchers need to resolve distinct but complementary dimensions of biology, and highly complex biological systems, which is why in 2013, the technique was awarded Nature's Method of the Year. While these sensitive and robust molecular workflows allow researchers to obtain vast amounts of information about diverse biological characteristics, key stages of these new techniques, such as sample preparation, can initially seem complex.
SPEAKER: Thankfully, educational online resources and webinars abound, ready to help aspiring researchers on their single-cell journey. Key technologies, such as Chromium, allow researchers to conduct these single-cell studies of both large and small scales, providing researchers with the opportunity to simultaneously profile different omic layers of information, such as gene expression and open chromatin from single cells of various sample types and sizes.
SPEAKER: The ability to obtain all of this information from tens of thousands to over a million different single cells can multiply the power of discovery to characterize cell types and states, while providing information on gene regulatory programs. However, this produces a vast quantity of data that can be intimidating to analyze. Fortunately, software solutions, such as the 10x Cloud, are available online to provide researchers with a means to interpret the towering volume of data produced by these studies.
SPEAKER: In fact, the rapid development of technologies and analysis software that has enabled the parallel study of multimodal omics profiles from a single cell has had such an impact that, in 2019, single-cell multimodal omics was named Nature's Method of the Year, inspiring scientists from around the world covering key areas of research, including oncology, immunology, and neurology to integrate single-cell studies into their research.
