TODD CARPENTER: Jim Neal has been a distinguished leader within the library and information communities throughout his four decades of service. Jim was an obvious choice for the 2020 Miles Conrad Award. He embodies all of the traits that the NISO Board of Directors looks to recognize through this award. Jim has been a visionary in scholarship, in service, and in technology, and has worked across the community to serve an ever-changing information landscape.
TODD CARPENTER: He is a tireless and thoughtful leader. He is willing to work collaboratively, but also a strong advocate for the information services community. As much as Jim has served and been a leader in our community, I personally have been a beneficiary of your many great ideas, your drive, and your vision. While you were Dean at the Johns Hopkins University Library, you helped to launch Project Muse as a joint initiative between the library and the press prior to when I joined the University Press.
TODD CARPENTER: But you were still actively involved with the press and Muse while I was there. You were active in the Association of Research Libraries and one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, SPARC, which helped to launch BIO1 as one of their initiatives, which is where I moved after leaving Hopkins. Later, you were Chair of NISO Board of Directors at a time when I was appointed Director.
TODD CARPENTER: In many ways, my career has been one of following in your prestigious footsteps. So as much as you have served and been a leader in this community, I, too, have been a beneficiary of your many great ideas, your drive, and vision. As such, it is with great pleasure to present to you the Miles Conrad Award for 2020.
JAMES NEAL: Thank you, Todd.
TODD CARPENTER: Congratulations
JAMES NEAL: Thank you so much.
