NICHOLAS COLYVAS: Hi, I'm Dr. Nicholas Colyvas. I'm an Orthopedic Surgeon at UCSF and I specialize in sports medicine. At UCSF, I treat a wide variety of sports injuries. This is in younger patients and weekend warriors and athletes really of all types. We treat knees and shoulders predominantly, and many of these treatments are non surgical.
NICHOLAS COLYVAS: Some of the more common surgeries we do are rotator cuff repairs, meniscus injuries, ACL reconstructions and shoulder instability surgeries. Mostly with surgery that is arthroscopic in other words, minimally invasive. My subspecialty interest is in meniscus, tears and meniscus problems, but I treat all types of sports injuries in the knees and shoulders. So we're very fortunate at UCSF to have an exceptional group of colleagues, of peers and of trainees that all work together and really have a excellent working relationship.
NICHOLAS COLYVAS: What I like about my job is being able to take someone who has a knee or shoulder injury that's getting in their way, not letting them play their sport or do their activity, and then working through that problem either with or without surgery to get them back to that activity. One of the most rewarding things about our job is that visit that patient comes back with their shoulder or their knee working really well, back to playing their sports, back to being functionally active and happy.
