Welcome to this third, in the series of COUNTER Foundation Classes. This class builds on Class 1, Metric Types and on Class 2 Reports, and we suggest that you watch those before this class. This is a revised recording to reflect some minor changes in Release 5.0.2 of the COUNTER Code of Practice published in 2021. This class walks through a scenario to show how usage information would be put together in a set of counter reports.
In this scenario, publisher platform Alpha PPA hosts a combination of materials, 100 full text journals, 750 full text books and multimedia database. This means that PPA falls under several host types aggregated full content, e-books, e journals and multimedia collection. Given the host types, we know that PPA needs to provide all four of the Master Reports and all of the Standard Views.
Institution Omega subscribes to the entire journals list on PPA, as well as the multimedia database. They do not subscribe to the book's list. Susan's activity, Susan is researching the history of antibiotics on publisher platform Alpha. She runs a search across the entire platform. Note that she has not limited her search to the multimedia database.
From the list of search results, Susan opens the following items. 2article abstracts from one journal, 1 article abstract from a second journal. 1 video from the multimedia database. 1 chapter abstract from the Big Book of medical Marvels. And 1 book abstract of A Medical History Reference. This activity triggers a whole series of investigation metrics, as well as some access denials.
Note that because Susan's institution has no licensed access, book content Release 5 counts to access denials, even though she has only attempted to access the abstracts at this point. After reading the abstracts, Susan triggers additional investigation and access denial metrics, as well as some request metrics by downloading two article full-text PDFs from the Journal of Antibiotics are Fun.
Watching one video from the multimedia database and attempting to download one chapter PDF from the Big Book of Medical Marvels. Note that her attempt to download the chapter counts as an investigation, but does not count as a request. This is because her institution has not licensed the books and therefore her access is denied. In summary, Susan session on publisher platform Alpha results in a whole series of metrics, which will be available to her librarian through all four Master Reports, plus a selection of Standard Views.
That would be the Platform Master Report PR and the Standard View PR_P1. The Database Master report DR and its Standard View. DR_D1, the Title Master Report TR and its Standard Views TR, TR_B2 and TR_J3, and the Item Master Report and its Standard View IR_M1. The metrics that will be shown in these reports fall under three headings in search activity, there will be 1 searches platform and 1searches regular. In view activity
there will be 6 total item investigations, 6 unique item investigations, 2 unique title investigations and 2 no license. And under her download or watch activity, you will see 4 total item investigations, 3total item requests, 3 unique item requests. And 2 no license.
