When a patient is unable to participate in bed mobility or assisted transfers, it may be necessary to place a draw sheet underneath the patient. The clinician begins by gathering up the sheet on one side. If the bed rails remain up, the clinician must use good body mechanics to minimize stress on the lower back while reaching over the bed rails. Next, the patient is rolled onto one side using proximal points of contact and the sheet is tucked lengthwise as far underneath the patient's body as possible.
Then, the patient is rolled over the sheet to the other side. and the sheet is pulled out from under the patient's body and smoothed to avoid wrinkles.
