A patient who is having difficulty with sit-to-stand transfers may use unsafe techniques. Here, the patient tries to compensate for weakness in the legs by putting his arms on the therapist to pull up to stand. Instead, the patient is redirected to push up from the armrests. If armrests are not available, or the patient needs more leverage, an acceptable alternative is to put the patient's hands on the therapist's forearms as the patient lifts himself.
