The technique for performing an instrument tie with nonabsorbable sutures, the leading end of suture is wrapped twice around the needle driver by moving the needle driver, not the suture. The trailing end is then gently grasped. The hands are crossed, forming the first knot. This is then repeated by taking the needle driver to the center of the wound, wrapping the suture a single time around the needle driver, grasping again, moving in the opposite direction, and, finally, by again taking the needle driver from the center, wrapping a single time around, grasping the trailing end of suture, and pulling in the opposite direction.
The suture is then trimmed gently, and the knot is complete.
