>> You're going to see a gravely ill patient who's in the emergency room following an automobile accident. He's had a pelvic fracture and ruptured bladder and is on the way to surgery. Notice how the clinician asks only key clinician centered questions and does not go through all five steps of the patient centered interview. Instead, she focuses on being supportive using nurse and providing much reassurance. >> Hi, Mr. Green. >> Yes. >> Hi. I'm Dr. Shahar.
I'm one of the internal medicine physicians here at the hospital. I'll be one of the physicians taking care of you. How are you feeling? >> I'm hurting. My legs. My face. My abdomen hurts. >> Yeah. Hurting all over. You've been through a lot. >> What happened?
>> You've been through a very bad car accident. You and your wife. But you're OK. You're at the hospital. You're at the right place. We've done a lot of lab work and imaging on you. You're going to go off to surgery soon. They're going to fix some fractures that you have in your pelvis and a punctured bladder that you have.
But we're going to take good care of all of that. OK? >> When am I going to surgery? Now? >> Yeah. Very shortly. >> I'm kind of afraid I'm not going to make it. >> Afraid. I hear you're afraid. You've been through a lot today.
>> Kind of -- kind of shivering. Chills. I'm afraid to die. I don't want to die. >> I hear that you're afraid to die and you've been through a lot, but rest assured you're in the right place and we'll be taking very good care of you. OK? You're going to be just fine. >> Are you sure? >> Yes. I'll make sure that your wife is doing very well as well. I'll go over there and check up on her.
And I will meet with you after -- after the surgery in the recovery room and update you on her condition as well. >> OK. I'll put myself in your hands. >> We'll make sure to take very good care of both of you. OK? >> Thank you. >> You're welcome. >> Thank you very much. >> All right.
