For a safe transfer of a patient from a bed to a chair, engage the patient in the process. The therapist can say "Mr Smith, we're going to get out of bed today, is that okay? Great! First I need to sit you up." Notice the centralized control of the patient's movements during the lift. If the patient is dizzy after sitting up, check the patient's blood pressure.
If the patient is not dizzy, then proceed with the transfer. Assist the patient with scooting forward to the edge of the bed. When the patient is ready, assist the patient as needed with the transfer, encouraging him to perform as much of the transfer as possible, and directing with distal cues, such as hand placement.
