For the simple running suture an anchoring stitch is placed at the far end of the wound by entering at 90 degrees, moving outward slightly when you're deep in the skin, and exiting on the contralateral wound edge. This anchoring suture is, of course, tied. And then the loose end may be snipped. At this point, with a running technique successive bites are taken moving along the course of the wound, entering, again, at 90 degrees, exiting on the contralateral side, again, at 90 degrees, pulling through, and, again, continuing moving along the course of the wound.
Once the end of the wound is reached, suture material is simply tied off and a series of running sutures has been effectively placed.
